Ngũ Hành Cục (thường gọi tắt là Cục) là một con số ngũ hành gắn liền với mỗi lá số, được suy ra ngay sau khi đã an xong cung Mệnh. Cục tuy chỉ là một dòng nhỏ in cạnh cung Mệnh, nhưng lại là chiếc bản lề của cả lá số: nó quyết định sao Tử Vi được an vào cung nào, và từ đó kéo theo vị trí của 13 chính tinh còn lại; nó cũng quyết định bạn bước vào đại hạn đầu tiên ở tuổi nào. Hiểu Cục là hiểu vì sao hai người sinh cùng ngày nhưng khác tháng, khác giờ lại có lá số hoàn toàn khác nhau.

Năm bậc Cục

Có đúng năm Cục, mỗi Cục mang một hành và một con số cố định:

• Thủy Nhị Cục (hành Thủy, số 2)
• Mộc Tam Cục (hành Mộc, số 3)
• Kim Tứ Cục (hành Kim, số 4)
• Thổ Ngũ Cục (hành Thổ, số 5)
• Hỏa Lục Cục (hành Hỏa, số 6)

Con số đi kèm không phải để trang trí. Nó là "nhịp đếm" của lá số: khi an Tử Vi, người ta lấy ngày sinh âm lịch chia theo con số Cục để tìm cung đặt Đế tinh; khi lập đại hạn, con số Cục chính là tuổi khởi đầu của vận mười năm đầu tiên.

Cục được xác định như thế nào?

Cục được rút ra từ can và chi của cung Mệnh, chứ không phải từ năm sinh. Sau khi định được cung Mệnh nằm ở địa chi nào, ta gắn cho nó một thiên can (theo phép Ngũ Hổ Độn dựa trên can của năm sinh), rồi tra ngũ hành nạp âm của cặp can chi đó. Ngũ hành nạp âm ấy chính là Cục. Ví dụ cung Mệnh là Bính Dần thì nạp âm là "Lư Trung Hỏa", thuộc Hỏa, nên lá số là Hỏa Lục Cục.

Phép tính này khá rối với người mới, nên hầu hết mọi người để máy an. Khi bạn lập lá số tại Mệnh Tử Vi, Cục được tính tự động và hiển thị ngay cạnh cung Mệnh, bạn không cần thuộc bảng nạp âm. Điều đáng nhớ chỉ là: Cục đến từ cung Mệnh, mà cung Mệnh lại đến từ tháng và giờ sinh, nên khai sai giờ là sai Cục, sai luôn vị trí Tử Vi.

Vì sao Cục lại quan trọng đến vậy?

1. Cục an sao Tử Vi và toàn bộ chính tinh

Tử Vi là Đế tinh, là sao được an đầu tiên; mười ba chính tinh còn lại đều xếp theo nó. Vị trí của Tử Vi phụ thuộc vào hai dữ kiện: ngày sinh âm lịch và Cục. Cùng một ngày sinh, nếu Cục khác nhau thì Tử Vi rơi vào cung khác, kéo theo cả 14 chính tinh dịch chuyển. Đây là lý do Cục được xem là "chìa khóa" mở ra phần xương sống của lá số.

2. Cục định tuổi vào đại hạn

Con số Cục là tuổi bắt đầu đại hạn thứ nhất. Người Thủy Nhị Cục vào đại hạn đầu lúc 2 tuổi, mỗi vận kế tiếp cách nhau 10 năm (2-11, 12-21...); người Hỏa Lục Cục thì khởi vận muộn hơn, từ 6 tuổi (6-15, 16-25...). 3. Cục soi chiếu với bản Mệnh

Ngoài vai trò kỹ thuật, Cục còn được đặt cạnh bản Mệnh (ngũ hành nạp âm của năm sinh) để xét sinh khắc, một lớp luận đoán nền tảng:

• Cục sinh Mệnh: Cục nuôi dưỡng Mệnh, được trợ lực, nhìn chung thuận lợi.
• Mệnh sinh Cục: Mệnh hao tổn để nuôi Cục, thường vất vả, phải tự thân nhiều.
• Cục khắc Mệnh: Cục đè Mệnh, là thế kiêng kỵ, dễ gặp lực cản từ hoàn cảnh.
• Mệnh khắc Cục: Mệnh phải vượt khó để chế ngự Cục, có chí nhưng nhọc.
• Tương hòa (cùng hành): hai bên hòa thuận, êm xuôi.

Quy tắc ngũ hành quen thuộc: Mộc sinh Hỏa, Hỏa sinh Thổ, Thổ sinh Kim, Kim sinh Thủy, Thủy sinh Mộc; và Mộc khắc Thổ, Thổ khắc Thủy, Thủy khắc Hỏa, Hỏa khắc Kim, Kim khắc Mộc. Lưu ý lớp này chỉ là một mảnh ghép: một lá số có Cục khắc Mệnh nhưng chính tinh sáng sủa, cách cục đẹp vẫn tốt như thường, đừng vội kết luận xấu tốt chỉ vì một dòng sinh khắc.

Cục mạnh, Cục yếu và mùa sinh

Người xưa còn xét Cục có "đắc thời" hay không qua mùa sinh: Mệnh hành Mộc sinh mùa Xuân, hành Hỏa sinh mùa Hạ, hành Kim sinh mùa Thu, hành Thủy sinh mùa Đông thì được coi là vượng, hợp thời. Đây là cách đánh giá thêm sắc thái, không thay đổi cấu trúc sao. Với người mới, chỉ cần nắm chắc ba vai trò chính ở trên là đủ dùng.

Cục có phải là mệnh ngũ hành của tôi không?

Không hẳn. "Bản Mệnh" là ngũ hành nạp âm của năm sinh (ví dụ tuổi Canh Ngọ là Lộ Bàng Thổ). "Cục" là ngũ hành nạp âm của cung Mệnh. Hai con số này khác nhau và được đem so sinh khắc với nhau như đã nói ở trên.

Cục có thay đổi theo thời gian không?

Không. Cục cố định suốt đời, vì nó sinh ra từ ngày giờ sinh không đổi. Cái thay đổi theo thời gian là đại hạn và tiểu hạn, tức là bạn lần lượt đi qua các cung, chứ bản thân Cục thì giữ nguyên.

The Five-Element Bureau (often shortened to the Bureau, or Cục in Vietnamese) is a five-element number tied to every chart, derived right after the Self palace has been placed. Though it is just a small line printed beside the Self palace, the Bureau is the hinge of the whole chart: it decides which palace the star Tử Vi is placed in, and with it the positions of the other thirteen major stars; it also decides the age at which you enter your first decade cycle. Understanding the Bureau is understanding why two people born on the same day but in a different month or hour end up with completely different charts.

The five Bureaus

There are exactly five Bureaus, each carrying one element and one fixed number:

• Water 2 Bureau (Thủy Nhị Cục, element Water, number 2)
• Wood 3 Bureau (Mộc Tam Cục, element Wood, number 3)
• Metal 4 Bureau (Kim Tứ Cục, element Metal, number 4)
• Earth 5 Bureau (Thổ Ngũ Cục, element Earth, number 5)
• Fire 6 Bureau (Hỏa Lục Cục, element Fire, number 6)

The number is not decorative. It is the "counting beat" of the chart: when placing Tử Vi, the lunar birth day is grouped by the Bureau number to find the emperor star's palace; when building the decade cycles, the Bureau number is the starting age of the very first ten-year cycle.

How is the Bureau determined?

The Bureau is drawn from the stem and branch of the Self palace, not from the birth year. Once the Self palace's branch is located, it is assigned a heavenly stem (via the "Five Tigers" method based on the birth-year stem), and the nạp âm element of that stem-branch pair is read off. That nạp âm element is the Bureau. For example, if the Self palace is Bính Dần, its nạp âm is "Fire in the Furnace," which is Fire, so the chart is a Fire 6 Bureau.

This calculation is fiddly for beginners, so most people let the software do it. When you cast a chart at Mệnh Tử Vi, the Bureau is computed automatically and shown next to the Self palace, so you need not memorise the nạp âm table. The one thing to remember: the Bureau comes from the Self palace, which in turn comes from the birth month and hour, so a wrong birth time means a wrong Bureau and a wrongly placed Tử Vi.

Why does the Bureau matter so much?

1. The Bureau places Tử Vi and all major stars

Tử Vi is the emperor star, the first to be placed; the other thirteen major stars are arranged relative to it. Tử Vi's position depends on two inputs: the lunar birth day and the Bureau. For the same birth day, a different Bureau puts Tử Vi in a different palace, shifting all 14 major stars with it. This is why the Bureau is regarded as the "key" that unlocks the backbone of the chart.

2. The Bureau sets the age you enter the decade cycles

The Bureau number is the starting age of the first decade cycle. A Water 2 Bureau person enters the first cycle at age 2, each following cycle ten years apart (2–11, 12–21...); a Fire 6 Bureau person starts later, from age 6 (6–15, 16–25...). 3. The Bureau is weighed against the Fate element

Beyond its technical role, the Bureau is set beside the Fate element (the nạp âm element of the birth year) to judge their generating-and-controlling relationship, a foundational layer of reading:

• Bureau generates Fate: the Bureau nourishes Fate, a supportive, generally favourable stance.
• Fate generates Bureau: Fate is drained to feed the Bureau, usually toilsome, much self-reliance needed.
• Bureau controls Fate: the Bureau presses on Fate, an unfavourable stance, prone to resistance from circumstance.
• Fate controls Bureau: Fate must overcome the Bureau, ambition paired with effort.
• In harmony (same element): the two sit at ease, smooth going.

The familiar five-element cycle: Wood feeds Fire, Fire feeds Earth, Earth feeds Metal, Metal feeds Water, Water feeds Wood; and Wood controls Earth, Earth controls Water, Water controls Fire, Fire controls Metal, Metal controls Wood. Remember this is only one piece: a chart where the Bureau controls Fate but the major stars are bright and the patterns fine is still good, so do not rush to judge a chart from one line of generation-and-control.

Strong Bureau, weak Bureau and the season of birth

The ancients also judged whether a Bureau is "in its time" by the season of birth: a Wood Fate born in spring, a Fire Fate in summer, a Metal Fate in autumn, a Water Fate in winter is deemed prosperous and in season. This adds shading; it does not change the star structure. For beginners, grasping the three main roles above is enough to work with.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Bureau the same as my Fate element?

Not quite. The "Fate element" is the nạp âm element of your birth year (for example a Canh Ngọ year is "Roadside Earth"). The "Bureau" is the nạp âm element of your Self palace. The two are different numbers and are compared for generation-and-control as described above.

Does the Bureau change over time?

No. The Bureau is fixed for life, since it springs from an unchanging birth date and time. What changes over time are the decade and annual cycles, that is, you move through the palaces one by one, while the Bureau itself stays put.

What should I remember my Bureau for?

Most usefully, to quickly work out your cycle ages: take the Bureau number as the starting point and add ten years at a time. Knowing which decade cycle you are in is the first step to comparing it with the stars in that cycle's palace.
