Cách xác định cung Mệnh và cung Thân

Người xưa định vị hai cung này bằng một quy tắc đối xứng đẹp: bắt đầu từ cung Dần kể là tháng Giêng, đếm thuận đến tháng sinh; từ đó đếm nghịch theo giờ sinh thì được cung Mệnh, đếm thuận theo giờ sinh thì được cung Thân (kể từ giờ Tý). Vì một đếm xuôi một đếm ngược nên Mệnh và Thân chỉ trùng nhau khi sinh giờ Tý hoặc giờ Ngọ, còn lại luôn tách thành hai cung khác nhau. Cung Mệnh: tiên thiên, nửa đời đầu

Cung Mệnh đại diện cho phần "tiên thiên" của con người: tư chất bẩm sinh, hình dáng, tính cách gốc, năng khiếu và cả kiểu phản ứng tự nhiên trước hoàn cảnh. Truyền thống luận số coi cung Mệnh chi phối mạnh nhất trong khoảng ba mươi năm đầu đời, giai đoạn con người sống chủ yếu bằng những gì được trao sẵn: gia cảnh, tư chất, môi trường thuở nhỏ. Chính tinh thủ Mệnh sáng sủa thì khởi đầu thuận lợi; Mệnh có sát tinh thì tuổi trẻ nhiều thử thách nhưng đó cũng là lò rèn tính cách.

Cung Thân: hậu thiên, nửa đời sau

Cung Thân đại diện cho phần "hậu thiên": những gì con người tự gây dựng, hướng đời sống nghiêng về đâu sau khi đã trưởng thành. Từ khoảng tuổi trung niên trở đi, ảnh hưởng của cung Thân được coi là rõ dần và có thể lấn át cung Mệnh. Vì vậy mới có câu "Mệnh tốt không bằng Thân tốt": người có Mệnh bình thường nhưng Thân đẹp thì càng về sau càng lên; ngược lại Mệnh đẹp mà Thân xấu thì nửa đời sau phải giữ gìn nhiều hơn.

Ý nghĩa từng vị trí Thân cư

Vì cung Thân luôn "ở nhờ" một trong sáu cung cố định, vị trí Thân cư trở thành một thông tin luận đoán rất đắt giá, cho biết trọng tâm cuộc đời nghiêng về lĩnh vực nào:

• Thân cư Mệnh: Mệnh Thân đồng cung, con người trước sau như một, tự lực, cuộc đời do chính tay mình định hình, tốt xấu đều đậm nét.
• Thân cư Phúc Đức: nửa đời sau gắn với phúc phận dòng họ và đời sống tinh thần, hưởng phúc hay chịu nghiệp của tổ tiên rõ hơn người khác.
• Thân cư Quan Lộc: sự nghiệp là trục chính của cuộc đời, thành bại đời người gắn chặt với công danh chức nghiệp.
• Thân cư Thiên Di: cuộc đời gắn với chuyện ra ngoài: đi xa lập nghiệp, giao thiệp rộng, thành công đến từ môi trường ngoài quê hương.
• Thân cư Tài Bạch: đời sống xoay quanh tiền bạc kinh doanh, giỏi xoay xở vật chất, hậu vận thường khá lên nhờ tự kiếm.
• Thân cư Phu Thê: hôn nhân ảnh hưởng đặc biệt lớn, đời sống nửa sau gắn chặt với người phối ngẫu, thuận thì được nhờ, nghịch thì lụy.

Luận Mệnh và Thân phối hợp ra sao?

Quy trình hợp lý là xem Mệnh trước, Thân sau, rồi cân cả hai. Trước hết xem chính tinh thủ Mệnh và tam phương tứ chính của Mệnh để nắm tư chất và thế cục chung. Sau đó xem cung Thân: sao tại Thân sáng hay tối, vị trí Thân cư nói lên trọng tâm nào. Cuối cùng so sánh: Mệnh và Thân đều sáng là lá số bền từ đầu tới cuối; Mệnh kém Thân tốt là số đi lên, càng già càng vững; Mệnh tốt Thân kém thì nên tích lũy sớm và sống thận trọng ở hậu vận. Cổ nhân còn xét thêm cung Phúc Đức làm nền cho cả hai, tạo thành thế chân vạc Mệnh, Thân, Phúc.

On every Tử Vi chart there are two root positions around which all interpretation revolves: the Self palace (Mệnh) and the Body palace (Thân). Both are set from the birth month and hour, but they carry two different layers of meaning: the Self is what heaven grants at birth, while the Body is what a person expresses and builds up later. Understanding this pair lets you avoid the most common beginner's mistake: fixating on the Self palace alone and forgetting the other half of life.

How to locate the Self and Body palaces

The ancients located these two palaces with an elegant symmetry: start from the Dần palace as the first lunar month, count forward to the birth month; from there, count backward by the birth hour to reach the Self palace, and forward by the birth hour to reach the Body palace (counting from the Tý hour). Because one counts forward and the other backward, the Self and Body coincide only for a birth in the Tý or Ngọ hour; otherwise they always split into two different palaces. From this rule too, the Body palace never lands arbitrarily: it can only sit in one of six palaces, the Self, Fortune, Career, Travel, Wealth or Spouse palace. The Self palace: the innate, the first half of life

The Self palace represents a person's "pre-heaven" part: innate aptitude, physique, core character, talents and even one's natural way of reacting to circumstances. The interpretive tradition holds that the Self palace governs most strongly in roughly the first thirty years of life, the stage when a person lives mainly on what was handed to them: family circumstances, aptitude, the environment of childhood. A bright major star at the Self palace means a favourable start; a malefic star at the Self palace means a youth full of challenges, which is also the forge of character.

The Body palace: the acquired, the second half of life

The Body palace represents the "post-heaven" part: what a person builds for themselves, the direction their life leans toward after reaching maturity. From around middle age onward, the influence of the Body palace is held to grow clearer and can overtake the Self palace. Hence the saying "a good Self is not as good as a good Body": a person with an ordinary Self but a fine Body rises more and more over time; conversely, a fine Self with a poor Body must take more care in the second half of life.

What each position of the Body palace means

Because the Body palace always "lodges" in one of six fixed palaces, its position becomes a very valuable piece of interpretation, showing which area life's centre of gravity leans toward:

• Body in the Self palace: Self and Body in one palace, a consistent person, self-reliant, a life shaped by one's own hand, with strengths and flaws both pronounced.
• Body in the Fortune palace: the second half of life is tied to the lineage's blessings and the inner life, enjoying ancestral merit or bearing ancestral karma more visibly than others.
• Body in the Career palace: career is the main axis of life, with success and failure bound tightly to one's standing and profession.
• Body in the Travel palace: life is tied to going out: building a career far away, mixing widely, with success coming from the world beyond one's homeland.
• Body in the Wealth palace: life revolves around money and business, skilled at handling material matters, with later fortune usually improving through one's own earning.
• Body in the Spouse palace: marriage has an especially large effect, the second half of life bound tightly to the spouse, a blessing when harmonious and a burden when not.

How are the Self and Body read together?

The sensible procedure is to read the Self first, the Body second, then weigh the two. First look at the major star at the Self palace and its triangle-and-square to grasp aptitude and the general configuration. Then look at the Body palace: whether the star there is bright or dim, and which centre of gravity its position indicates. Finally compare: when both Self and Body are bright, the chart is durable from start to finish; a weak Self with a good Body is a rising destiny, steadier with age; a good Self with a weak Body should accumulate early and live carefully in later fortune. The ancients also considered the Fortune palace as the foundation for both, forming a tripod of Self, Body and Fortune.

One technical point worth knowing: the Body palace has no stars of its own; it shares the stars of the functional palace it lodges in. Frequently asked questions

If the Self palace has no major star, can the Body palace replace it?

It does not replace it, but it can compensate. A "no major star" Self palace borrows the stars of the opposite palace to interpret it, and then the roles of the Body and Fortune palaces become all the more important. A "no major star" Self palace with a bright major star in the Body palace is still a chart with a good support for later fortune.

At what age does one shift from reading the Self to reading the Body?

Texts usually take a conventional mark around thirty, but this should be understood as a gradual transition, not an on-off switch. Common practice is: in youth read mainly the Self with the Body as reference; from middle age read mainly the Body with the Self as reference; and at every stage cross-reference the decade cycles. How do two people with the same Self palace but different Body palaces differ?

They have the same core aptitude but different life trajectories. The person with the Body in the Career palace pours their life into their work, while the person with the Body in the Spouse palace makes family the centre.
