Cung Mệnh: gốc rễ của lá số

Cung Mệnh là cung quan trọng nhất, đại diện cho bản thân đương số: tính cách bẩm sinh, tư chất, dung mạo, khuynh hướng hành xử và vận mệnh tổng quát. Chính tinh tọa thủ tại Mệnh được gọi là sao thủ mệnh, là "nhân vật chính" của cả lá số. Sao thủ mệnh sáng sủa thì tư chất phát huy thuận lợi, sao hãm địa thì cuộc đời cần nhiều cố gắng hơn. Trường hợp cung Mệnh không có chính tinh nào gọi là Mệnh vô chính diệu, khi đó phải mượn chính tinh của cung đối diện để luận.

Cung Phụ Mẫu: cha mẹ và bề trên

Cung Nô Bộc: bạn bè, người cộng sự

Tên cổ là Nô Bộc (người giúp việc), ngày nay được hiểu rộng là cung quan hệ xã hội: bạn bè, đồng nghiệp, cấp dưới, người hợp tác. Cung này tốt thì ra ngoài được người phù trợ, có bạn trung thành; cung này xấu thì dễ gặp bạn bè phản trắc, cộng sự gây liên lụy.

Cung Thiên Di: đường ra ngoài, xuất hành

Cung Thiên Di nằm đối diện cung Mệnh, nói về môi trường bên ngoài: ra ngoài gặp may hay gặp rủi, có duyên lập nghiệp xa quê không, được người ngoài quý mến hay đố kỵ. Vì đối chiếu thẳng vào Mệnh nên sao tốt ở Thiên Di cũng nâng đỡ Mệnh, sao xấu ở Thiên Di cũng uy hiếp Mệnh. Người có cung Thân đóng tại Thiên Di thường gắn cuộc đời với chuyện đi xa, lập nghiệp ngoài quê hương.

Cung Tật Ách: sức khỏe, tai nạn

Cung Tật Ách cho biết thể trạng bẩm sinh, loại bệnh dễ mắc và những tai ách có thể gặp trong đời. Khi luận sức khỏe, người ta xem hành của các sao đóng tại đây ứng với tạng phủ nào, ví dụ sao hành Hỏa liên quan tim mạch và huyết áp, sao hành Thủy liên quan thận và bài tiết. The Self palace (Mệnh): the root of the chart

The Self palace is the most important, representing the subject: innate character, aptitude, appearance, behavioural tendencies and overall destiny. The major star sitting in the Self palace is called the life-ruling star, the "lead character" of the whole chart. A bright life-ruling star lets one's aptitude flourish; a fallen star means life requires more effort. When the Self palace holds no major star it is called a "no major star" palace, in which case one borrows the major star of the opposite palace to interpret it.

The Parents palace (Phụ Mẫu): parents and elders

The Parents palace shows the subject's relationship with their parents: the bond of upbringing, protection or conflict, whether the parents are long-lived or short-lived, and the family circumstances in childhood. More broadly, this palace also speaks of relationships with elders in general, such as teachers, superiors and mentors.

The Fortune palace (Phúc Đức): the lineage's blessings

The Fortune palace governs the blessings handed down by ancestors, the inner life and longevity. The ancients called it the "root of all palaces": a strong Fortune palace can rescue many flaws in other palaces, while a weak one means even a fine Self palace is hard to enjoy in full. This palace also shows whether the subject lives introverted or extroverted, and whether they have an affinity for spiritual life.

The Property palace (Điền Trạch): home and land

The Property palace speaks of real estate and fixed assets: the ability to build one's own home, whether one inherits property, whether one settles in one place or moves often. Wealth stars such as Thái Âm and Thiên Phủ sitting bright in the Property palace are a sign of accumulating land and housing.

The Career palace (Quan Lộc): career and standing

The Career palace governs one's path to standing and career: which professions suit, fast or slow advancement, whether one works as an official or in business, whether one holds authority. This palace influences the Self palace directly, so its effect on overall destiny is large. When reading career, one always views the Career palace together with the Self, Wealth and Travel palaces in the triangle-and-square configuration.

The Friends palace (Nô Bộc): friends and associates

Its old name is Nô Bộc (servants); today it is understood broadly as the palace of social relationships: friends, colleagues, subordinates and partners. When this palace is good, one finds support and loyal friends out in the world; when it is poor, one easily meets treacherous friends and associates who bring trouble.

The Travel palace (Thiên Di): going out and journeys

The Travel palace lies opposite the Self palace and speaks of the external environment: luck or misfortune when out in the world, whether one is destined to build a career far from home, whether outsiders esteem or envy one. Because it faces the Self palace directly, good stars here also lift the Self palace, and bad stars here also threaten it. Someone whose Body palace sits in the Travel palace often ties their life to travelling far and building a career away from home.

The Health palace (Tật Ách): health and accidents

The Health palace shows one's innate constitution, the illnesses one is prone to and the misfortunes one may meet in life. When reading health, one matches the element of the stars here to the corresponding organs; for example, Fire-element stars relate to the heart and blood pressure, and Water-element stars to the kidneys and excretion. This palace should be read together with the Self palace and the decade cycles to know which periods call for attention to health.

The Wealth palace (Tài Bạch): money

The Wealth palace governs fortune: whether money comes easily or with difficulty, through which trade, whether incoming money can be kept, and whether prosperity comes early or late. Wealth stars such as Vũ Khúc, Thiên Phủ, Thái Âm or Hóa Lộc sitting here are a good sign for finances. Conversely, Địa Không, Địa Kiếp or the Major and Minor Loss stars gathering in the Wealth palace signal scattered money and a need for tight spending control.

The Children palace (Tử Tức): children

The Children palace speaks of one's children: many children or difficulty conceiving, dutiful or conflicting children, easy or hard childbirth, and whether one can rely on children in old age. This palace is also used to read the subject's "spiritual offspring," such as students or life's defining works.

The Spouse palace (Phu Thê): marriage

The Spouse palace governs romance and marriage: early or late marriage, the spouse's character, and whether the marriage is peaceful or stormy. Romance stars such as Đào Hoa and Hồng Loan gathering here usually indicate that love comes early; stars of solitude, or Tuần and Triệt blocking the palace, usually indicate late love or early hardship. For someone whose Body palace resides in the Spouse palace, married life has an especially large effect on the second half of life.

The Siblings palace (Huynh Đệ): brothers and sisters

The Siblings palace shows one's relationship with siblings: many or few, harmonious or discordant, whether they can help one another. Today this palace is also extended to read relationships with close peers, such as sworn brothers and bosom friends.

Triangle and square: no palace stands alone

The most important principle when reading the 12 palaces is that no palace stands on its own. Each palace receives influence from three others: the opposite palace (direct opposition) and the two trine palaces (four palaces away on each side). This set of four palaces is called the triangle and square (tam phương tứ chính). For example, a Self palace at Dần receives influence from Thân (opposition), Ngọ and Tuất (trine), which usually fall in the Travel, Career and Wealth palaces. So a Self palace with few good stars but gathering auspicious stars in its triangle can still make a fine chart, whereas a fine Self palace whose triangle is full of malefic stars calls for caution.

Which palace is the most important on a chart?

The Self palace is the root, but the ancients always considered the trio of Self, Body and Fortune together: the Self is aptitude, the Body is the second half of life, and Fortune is the lineage's foundation of blessing. A chart is considered durable when all three of these palaces have a good foundation.

Does a bad palace mean that area of life is ruined for good?

No. A palace with malefic stars only signals that the area holds many challenges and calls for active caution and adjustment. One must still consider star brightness, the palaces that influence it, and the decade cycles of each period. Many star patterns in Tử Vi even show that a well-placed malefic star becomes a strong driving force.

Why does my chart have a palace with no major star?
