Tên gọi của môn này lấy theo sao Tử Vi, ngôi sao được coi là đế tinh đứng đầu hệ thống tinh đẩu. Khác với bói toán dân gian dựa trên cảm tính, Tử Vi Đẩu Số là một hệ thống có quy tắc chặt chẽ: từ năm, tháng, ngày và giờ sinh của một người, người ta an định hơn một trăm ngôi sao lên một sơ đồ gồm mười hai cung, gọi là lá số tử vi, rồi căn cứ vào vị trí và sự phối hợp của các sao mà luận đoán về tính cách, sự nghiệp, tài lộc, hôn nhân, sức khỏe của đương số.

Nguồn gốc và vị trí của môn Tử Vi

Tương truyền người sáng lập Tử Vi Đẩu Số là đạo sĩ Trần Đoàn, hiệu Hi Di, sống vào cuối thời Ngũ Đại đầu thời Tống. Môn này được xây dựng trên nền tảng triết học Á Đông: thuyết Âm Dương, thuyết Ngũ Hành (Kim, Mộc, Thủy, Hỏa, Thổ), hệ thống Thiên Can Địa Chi và lịch pháp âm lịch. Tại Việt Nam, Tử Vi phát triển thành một truyền thống riêng với nhiều tác gia nổi tiếng, để lại các bộ sách thực hành và hàng nghìn câu phú đoán được truyền tụng đến ngày nay.

Cần phân biệt Tử Vi Đẩu Số với chiêm tinh phương Tây (horoscope). Chiêm tinh phương Tây dựa trên vị trí thực của các hành tinh trên hoàng đạo tại thời điểm sinh. Tử Vi Đẩu Số dùng các "sao" mang tính biểu tượng, được an theo công thức toán học từ ngày giờ sinh âm lịch, không phụ thuộc vào vị trí thiên văn thực tế. Một lá số tử vi gồm những gì?

Lá số tử vi truyền thống được vẽ thành một hình vuông chia mười hai ô xung quanh, mỗi ô là một cung, ở giữa ghi thông tin đương số. Mười hai cung mang tên mười hai địa chi: Tý, Sửu, Dần, Mão, Thìn, Tỵ, Ngọ, Mùi, Thân, Dậu, Tuất, Hợi. Trên khung đó, các thành phần chính của lá số gồm:

Cần những thông tin gì để lập lá số?

Để lập một lá số tử vi chính xác, bạn cần đúng bốn dữ kiện: năm sinh, tháng sinh, ngày sinh và giờ sinh theo âm lịch, kèm theo giới tính. Nếu bạn chỉ nhớ ngày dương lịch thì không sao, các công cụ hiện đại như trang lập lá số của Mệnh Tử Vi sẽ tự động chuyển đổi từ dương lịch sang âm lịch theo múi giờ Việt Nam trước khi an sao.

Trong bốn dữ kiện trên, giờ sinh là yếu tố hay bị nhầm nhất nhưng lại ảnh hưởng rất lớn: giờ sinh quyết định vị trí cung Mệnh và cung Thân, tức là quyết định toàn bộ cách bố trí của lá số. Lá số tử vi nói lên điều gì?

Theo quan niệm truyền thống, lá số là tấm bản đồ về thiên hướng của một con người: tính cách bẩm sinh, sở trường sở đoản, kiểu may rủi thường gặp, giai đoạn thuận lợi và giai đoạn cần thận trọng. Người luận số sẽ xem cung Mệnh để biết bản tính, cung Quan Lộc để biết đường công danh, cung Tài Bạch để biết cách kiếm và giữ tiền, cung Phu Thê để biết duyên phận hôn nhân, rồi đối chiếu với đại hạn để biết từng chặng đời diễn biến ra sao.

Điều quan trọng là hiểu đúng giới hạn của môn này. Tử Vi không phải lời tuyên án cố định về số phận. Cùng một lá số, hai người sinh ra trong hai hoàn cảnh khác nhau sẽ có hai cuộc đời khác nhau. Không nhớ giờ sinh thì có lập được lá số không?

Có thể lập nhưng độ chính xác giảm đáng kể, vì sai giờ sinh là sai vị trí cung Mệnh. Cách thường dùng là lập thử lá số ở vài giờ lân cận rồi đối chiếu các sự kiện quá khứ xem lá số nào khớp nhất. Nếu chỉ biết buổi (sáng, trưa, chiều, tối) thì nên thử cả hai giờ địa chi trong buổi đó.

Tử Vi Đẩu Số (Purple Star Astrology) is a traditional Eastern method of destiny analysis that took shape in Song-dynasty China and entered Vietnam many centuries ago. Its name comes from the Tử Vi star, regarded as the emperor star at the head of the stellar system. Unlike folk fortune-telling based on intuition, Tử Vi Đẩu Số is a system with strict rules: from a person's year, month, day and hour of birth, more than a hundred stars are placed onto a diagram of twelve palaces, called a natal chart (lá số), and from the position and interplay of the stars one interprets that person's character, career, wealth, marriage and health.

The origins and place of Tử Vi

Tradition holds that Tử Vi Đẩu Số was founded by the Taoist sage Trần Đoàn, styled Hi Di, who lived at the end of the Five Dynasties and the start of the Song. The system rests on East Asian philosophy: the theory of Yin and Yang, the Five Elements (Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, Earth), the heavenly-stem and earthly-branch system, and the lunar calendar. In Vietnam, Tử Vi grew into a distinct tradition with many famous authors, leaving behind practical texts and thousands of divinatory verses still recited today.

It is worth distinguishing Tử Vi Đẩu Số from Western astrology (the horoscope). Western astrology is based on the actual positions of the planets along the zodiac at the moment of birth. Tử Vi Đẩu Số uses symbolic "stars" placed by a mathematical formula from the lunar birth date and hour, independent of any real astronomical position. So the two systems produce different kinds of results and cannot be converted into each other.

What does a natal chart contain?

A traditional Tử Vi chart is drawn as a square divided into twelve cells around the edge, each cell being a palace, with the subject's information in the centre. The twelve palaces bear the names of the twelve earthly branches: Tý, Sửu, Dần, Mão, Thìn, Tỵ, Ngọ, Mùi, Thân, Dậu, Tuất, Hợi. Within that frame, the chart's main components are:

What information is needed to cast a chart?

To cast an accurate Tử Vi chart you need exactly four data points: the year, month, day and hour of birth by the lunar calendar, together with gender. If you only remember the solar date that is fine; modern tools such as the Mệnh Tử Vi chart page automatically convert from the solar to the lunar calendar for the Vietnamese time zone before placing the stars.

Of these four, the birth hour is the most often confused yet has the greatest impact: it decides the position of the Self and Body palaces, and therefore the whole layout of the chart. The ancients did not count hours by the 24-hour clock but divided a day and night into twelve branch hours, each two hours long. What does a natal chart tell you?

By traditional thinking, the chart is a map of a person's tendencies: innate character, strengths and weaknesses, the kinds of luck and misfortune they tend to meet, favourable periods and periods that call for caution. The reader looks at the Self palace for one's nature, the Career palace for one's path to standing, the Wealth palace for how one earns and keeps money, the Spouse palace for marital fate, then cross-references the decade cycles to see how each stage of life unfolds.

What matters is to understand the limits of this art correctly. Tử Vi is not a fixed verdict on fate. With the same chart, two people born into two different circumstances will live two different lives. The ancients said "virtue can overcome destiny": the chart shows tendencies, while each person's choices and effort decide the final outcome. So the most sensible way to use a chart is as a tool for self-reflection, helping you understand your strengths to develop them and your weaknesses to guard against them.

How do you start reading a chart?

For a beginner, the path to reading a chart should follow four steps. First, locate the Self palace and see which major star sits there, and whether it is bright or dim. Second, look at the "triangle and square" of the Self palace, that is the Career, Wealth and Travel palaces that influence it, to grasp the overall configuration. Third, look at the Body palace to see which area the second half of life leans toward. Fourth, look at the current decade cycle to see which stage of fortune you are in. Frequently asked questions

Can I cast a chart if I do not remember the birth hour?

You can, but accuracy drops considerably, because a wrong hour means a wrong Self palace. The common approach is to cast charts for a few nearby hours and compare them against past events to see which fits best. If you only know the part of day (morning, midday, afternoon, evening), try both branch hours within that part.

Do two people born at the same time share the same fate?

Their charts are identical, but their lives cannot be entirely the same. The Tử Vi tradition always stresses factors outside the chart: a family's accumulated merit, living environment, education and personal choices. The chart is only the starting condition, not the final result.
